University of Kentucky
Crime Log Instructions
Crime log case numbers do not run sequentially. The University of Kentucky Police Department assigns a case number or incident number for all reportable activities, both criminal and non-criminal. Only case numbers generated for criminal activity are listed in the crime log.
Crimes are in chronological order. The most recent crimes are at the top of the list by date reported.
The crime log incidents will not match the crime statistics, as the crime log is compiled using the Kentucky Revised Statues and the crime statistics are required by law to be compiled using the Federal Uniform Crime Reporting crime definitions.
Crimes must be entered into the Daily Crime Log within two (2) business days after the crime has been reported to Police/Public Safety/Security.
Hard copies of the Crime Logs are also available at the University of Kentucky Police Department at 305 Euclid Avenue during normal business hours.
Requests for copies of the crime log extending beyond 60 calendar days may be submitted by email to cmp@uky.edu, in person during normal business hours at the University of Kentucky Police Department's headquarters or by telephone at (859) 257-9567. The University of Kentucky Police Department- Division of Crisis Management and Preparedness will provide copies of the requested extended crime log within two (2) business days.
Note: Incidents with a case number that start with “CSA” involve information received from other University Administrators, who are defined by federal law as campus security authorities. These administrators share non-identifying information with the UKPD that is provided by the victim. In these incidents, the victim did not file an official police report and therefore, it is not always possible to provide information regarding the five areas typically covered in the Crime Log, i.e. (Category, Crime Date & Time, Report Date, Location, Residential Occurrence, Disposition). Because an official report was not filed, there will be no disposition. These incidents are reported to UKPD for statistical purposes and are posted to the Crime Log as the information is received by UKPD.
According to Federal Law, an institution may withhold any of the required fields of entry, i.e. the nature, date, time, location and/or disposition if any of the following conditions apply:
- The disclosure is prohibited by law
- If disclosure would jeopardize the confidentiality of the victim.
- If disclosure would jeopardize an ongoing criminal investigation or the safety of an individual
- If disclosure would cause a suspect to flee or evade detection
- If disclosure would result in the destruction of evidence
